Profile – Jill McPhail

Jill McPhail

I began painting in the mid to late 1950’s with Mrs Brook in Adelaide. In 1965 began studying with Amy Lakides here in Perth. I travelled to W.A. each year from 1965 to 1970 for tuition until Amy went to live in the United States.

My teaching career began in 1967 and continued for two years. I had the opportunity to begin teaching in Western Australia in 1977 and have continued on and off from then (more on than off) until now. During my painting career I have learnt many facets of china painting and have a deep knowledge of the art. I have also obtained a Certificate in Onglaze Painting. My specialty has been raised Paste work and I had the opportunity of learning from Mr Jim Stuart, who at that time was one of the very few people worldwide (excluding Factories) who was doing Raised Paste work. I have also attended many workshops, demonstrations and lectures from International and Australian Artists. Some of the Artists are Ruth Little, Annette Krum, Jane Houston, Jane Marks, David Bailey, Andreas Knobl, Andrew Orr, Filipe Pereira and Paula Collins and many more.

I was a Foundation of the South Australian China Painters Assoc. and have belonged to IPAT, formally ICPTO. When coming to Western Australia to live I joined the W.A. Guild of China Painters and the W.A. Women’s Society of Arts and Crafts. I have also been a member of the Australasian Porcelain Art Teachers since its inception.

I have a great love of China Painting and only wish I had more time to devote to this art.
